Cloves have a warm, sweet flavor that complements both sweet and savory dishes. Use cloves sparingly as they can easily overpower a dish. Put them on the outside of hams and let the flavor seep in. Stud an onion with cloves and add to soup or a braised dish.
Because of the bioactive chemicals of clove, the spice may be used as an ant repellent.
Cloves can be used to make a fragrant pomander when combined with an orange. When given as a gift in Victorian England, such a pomander indicated warmth of feeling.
